Our Collies

The Collie is a new breed that my Mother and I just recently fell in love with.  The breed just popped in our laps when Duke came to us from friends at our church.  They had an accidental litter and had no plans of selling puppies at that time.  I fell in love with him and immediately started doing research on the breed.  This is NOT how I would recommend getting a dog but God blessed the situation and our children enjoy playing with him.

The Collie has it's own health issues that any owner should be aware of before bringing home a bouncy little fur-ball.  The ones that are cause for concern include the sometimes lethal use of certain wormers such as Ivomectin (be safe: just use Panacur), Hip Dysplasia, and the Collie Eye Anomoly.  Collie eye is so common in Collies that it is the breeds biggest problem.  Collie Eye Anomaly is actually a group of problems found in the eye.  It can be as simple as an abnormality in the back of the eye ball, which will cause the dog no problems whatsoever, to a serious defect where the retina is detached and the dog is blind in that eye.

Duke is my Collie (Desiree) and Cassie belongs to Melrey's kennel (Mel and Renee: AKA- my parents).  Our family never thought of owning a Collie until Duke popped into our lives, so Mel decided to purchase Cassie; therefore, this breed is a shared breed in our family.  We (Willits Shady Nook) are primarily known for our Boxers and they (Melrey) are primarily known for their German Shepherds, but the Collie belongs to us all.  Hasn't that always been true?  The Collie has been the American way since Lassie!
